Part 8: Why I Do Not Want to Return to the USSR? (1946) - Ivan Bahriany
Work: “Why I Do Not Want to Return to the USSR?” (abridged, adapted), Ivan Bahriany Date: 1946 Where written: postwar Germany (among Ukrainian displaced persons, DP camps) Context: after World War II, the Allies began forcibly returning Soviet citizens (repatriation). Many Ukrainians feared repression. Who: Bahriany (1906–1963) — former prisoner of Soviet camps (arrests in 1932, 1938), participant in the Ukrainian political movement in exile. Purpose: a public appeal/explanation to the Western world explaining why Ukrainians did not want to return to the USSR. What it is: a political pamphlet + personal testimony about repression, terror, and loss. Role: became one of the best-known texts of the Ukrainian émigré community, explaining the realities of the USSR to a foreign audience. ----------------------- I do not want to return to my Homeland precisely because I love my Homeland. And love for one’s Homeland, for one’s people — that is, national patriotism — is the gravest crime in the USSR. It has been so for twenty-five whole years, and it is so now. This crime is called, in the Bolshevik language — in the language of red Moscow fascism — “local nationalism.” Why is this considered the gravest crime? The USSR, as is known, is a federation of equal republics. Equal nations which, under the “Stalin Constitution,” have the right to national freedom, right up to secession from the USSR. And therefore, every representative of every nation supposedly has the right to his own patriotism and to love for his people. But that is only in theory. In reality, if some republic wanted to leave the federation, it would be crushed with fire and iron by its “equal” ally — Bolshevik Russia. And it would be kept and maintained in that “free” union through terror. Bolshevism is concerned with creating a single totalitarian red empire, with a single administration, a single language, a single culture, a single ideology, and a single policy. Therefore, the slightest manifestation of independent will by any of the “equal” nations in the USSR (except Russia) is suppressed by terrible moral and physical terror. Through this terror, Russian red fascism (Bolshevism) attempts to transform one hundred nationalities into the so-called “single Soviet people” — that is, in reality, into the Russian people. That is why Ukrainians are not left in peace even beyond the borders of the USSR, and attempts are made, through force and provocations, to drag them back and neutralize them. ------------------ P.S. Bolshevism is the political ideology and practice of the Bolsheviks, the radical wing of the Russian Social Democratic movement led by Lenin, who seized power in Russia in 1917. They advocated Communist Party rule, the suppression of political opponents, and revolutionary violence in pursuit of building a new society.
