Killing On Borrowed Time

I learned the hard way where the fences stand, Painted lines in an industrial land Rules get written with a polished pen Far from the blood, far from where we stand They say order keeps the wheels in place Keeps the peace, keeps the pace I don’t hate the road, I walk it fine Just don’t chain my hands when I’m feeding mine I ain’t blind to the need for law I just know when it bites too hard There’s a difference most folks forget ’Tween order kept and a boot on a neck We’re living on the edge, yeah, borrowed time With hands clean and reasons right Not tearing it down, just standing on business When the line gets crossed and the leash gets tight This ain’t chaos, this is choice This is feeding kin with a steady voice Borrowed time, but I’ll spend it free On food, on freedom, on liberty Reynolds said it best, straight from his chest Government's to get in a man's way He'd feel the same about the world today Watching red tape coil where the work once lay I don’t curse the bridge that carries the load I curse the toll on the rancher’s road When a kitchen turns into a crime scene For knowing how food used to be I respect the wheel when it keeps things turning But I won’t stand still when it comes at me burning They forget the hands that built the frame Now it treats honest work like it’s a shame We’re living on the edge, yeah, borrowed time But our knives are honed and our reasons right Not burning it down, just holding the line When the reach gets long and the rules don’t rhyme This ain’t lawless, this is livin’ This is taking care of our own, we don’t need forgiven Borrowed time, but I’ll spend it true On blood-earned food and my moral views Ain't looking for pitty, don't need permission You shouldn't need to tell the man what's in your own kitchen If trust is gone and fear’s the tool That ain’t safety, that’s just rules to rule I’ll shake your hand, I’ll play it fair Just don’t step between me and my table fare We’re living on the edge, yeah, borrowed time But the high ground’s ours and we’re standing fine Not against the system, just against the lie That control is care and compliance means right Borrowed time, but I won’t kneel For doing what’s honest, local, and real If liberty’s risky, I’ll take the blame I’d rather live sharp than starve in a cage Borrowed time… clean hands… Still feeding our people, still making our stand
