Getting Older (Live)

I slip into the silence Of the cold and of the dark Time seems to pass so slowly And the clock’s been wrong for weeks. I used to care about the details, Now I just keep things a-moving. There’s comfort in the daily, Even when it drags me down. This is getting older Where the road just seems to end. Not the life I pictured, But the one I slipped into. The band sounds have all gone quiet, Our last gig was back in spring. One guy switched to the night shift, Another drove himself away. We said we’d play again soon, But no one followed through. We meant it when we said it, Just not enough to move. This is getting older I’m not sad; I’m settled in. I still crank the amp up higher, Just not as loud as way back then. I don’t want to start it over, I don’t want it all to end. I’ve outgrown all the nightly chaos, But not all the memories that it meant. I walk past my old school hangouts, They've changed hands ten times since then. It still reeks of dust and innocence, Waiting for the next big thing. I don’t miss being young and wild, Just how clear things used to feel. Now every choice seems so important, And I’m much slower to decide. This is getting older The noise is lower now. But I still feel that hunger pulling, Every time I plug in my guitar. I’ve got songs I never finished, Notes I don’t remember playing. Some still hit like they should have, Most just sit there idly; dusty in a drawer. Some things stay undeveloped, I’m not through making noise. It’s not about who gets to hear them, It’s about saying it at all. This is getting older Not for you but mine to keep. I'll savor every moment, Cuz it's all I've got to hold on to. I’ve got songs I never finished, Notes I don’t remember playing. Some still hit like they should have, Most just sit there idly; dusty in a drawer. Some things stay undeveloped, I’m not through making noise. It’s not about who gets to hear them, It’s about saying it at all. This is getting older This is getting older
