Every mile had brought them closer to the thing they came to do. Four days upon the road, and finally the gates in view. They thought the ride was over. They were half a day too late. **[Verse 1]** They left the city at break of day, with four long days still in their way. Cassian rode with hope held tight, his daughter somewhere out of sight. Four days if weather stayed their friend, three and a half if roads would bend. So mile by mile they travelled on, from early light till daylight gone. **[Verse 2]** Day one was slow, the saddle won, their desk-bound hero wasn’t having fun. Day two went better than before, though Cassian felt each mile much more. Day three brought trouble on the road, a handful thought to steal their load. They learned quite fast they’d chosen wrong and did not trouble them for long. By noon on day four, roofs appeared, the walls of Markenau drew near. **[Chorus]** Four days upon the road, three and a half if luck held true. Every mile had brought them closer to the thing they came to do. Four days upon the road, and finally the gates in view. They thought the ride was over. They were half a day too late. **[Verse 3]** Cassian turned toward his home, while Terry took the chapel road. They planned to meet beside the watch when both had learned what they could know. A simple plan, a little time, one final stop, one final mile. But at the watchhouse gate they found the answer that would turn them round. The cells were bare. The prisoners gone. They’d left at dawn. **[Bridge]** They had ridden hard through rain and dust, kept the pace because they must. Four days measured hoof by hoof. Good time. Just not enough. **[Final Chorus]** Four days upon the road, three and a half might have been right. They entered through the gates at noon. The others left with morning light. Four days upon the road, and now the road began once more. Half a day too late was no reason to stop anymore. **[Outro]** Turn the horses. Take the road. RIDE!
