20 Minute Death March

Ash on my sleeve Half a sandwich in the fridge Thought I planned this out Yeah Snack Drawer Empty I really didn’t think it through Keys in the bowl Brain parked miles away Too high to drive - we march Sidewalk spinning Stop sign grinning Every step a brand-new town You check your phone We’ve gone four blocks Feels like sundown to sundown Twenty-minute death march Feels like eight long hours Hungry as a black hole Crawling under streetlight towers Laughing at the mailboxes Talking to the ground Every little footstep booming like a countdown You keep seeing sirens In bicycle reflectors I swear that mailbox winked Like it’s running some election You say “focus straight ahead” But the pavement’s breathing slow Then I see blue at the corner And my veins just freeze like snow Badge glows brighter than the moon Heartbeat louder than the cars He says “evening Where you headed?” We both shrug Like we forgot who we are You say “act normal” I say “define that” We both start giggling Like a messed-up laugh track He stares through the smoke Asks “how far you got?” You say “twenty minutes” But it feels like we’ve been walking Through a spinning parking lot Store sign I see it It's close Traffic moving slow Four lanes to the destination Walk slow and steady Cold steal Open door "...we forgot what we came for."
