Kindness We Kept

We never saw the final page arriving It turned itself while we were living through No single moment asked us both to leave it We simply grew toward different views I pass the places where we shared our laughter They don't ask me to wish those days returned They gently hold the pieces of our story And all the gentle lessons that we learned Thank you for the road we walked together For every light we never meant to find Some hearts are meant to change each other's journey Not remain for all of time The distance doesn't take away your meaning It only gives the memories new air I carry all the goodness without reaching For something neither one could keep from change We were never meant to own each other Only meet when both our paths aligned That's enough to fill a lifetime's gratitude And leave no reason left behind Thank you for the road we walked together For every light we never meant to find Some hearts are meant to change each other's journey Not remain for all of time Now someone else will know the smile you carry And someone new will walk a while with me The love we gave keeps moving through the future In ways we'll never fully get to see There's peace inside an open-handed farewell No debt to pay, no promises to prove Just quiet thanks for sharing part of living And trusting life to keep us moving through Thank you for the road we walked together For every light we never meant to find Some hearts are meant to change each other's journey Not remain for all of time Thank you for the road we walked together I'll always greet your memory with grace Every ending opened up another sunrise And love will always have its place
