No Grain Knows

+ Show full styles

[Intro — isolated piano notes] A child sits in the sand. No plans. No questions. Just two little hands and a mountain to make. [Verse 1] He takes a handful from the ground, lets every little grain fall down. One is pale, one catches light, one disappears completely from sight. He doesn't stop to pick the best. He doesn't throw away the rest. He doesn't need to understand every little piece of sand. [Pre-Chorus] One by one, they're only grains. Put them close— and something changes. [Chorus — children softly join] No grain knows it's making a mountain. No grain sees what we can see. Every one a little different, every one where it should be. You could hold one to the light and study everything you found— but you'll never find the mountain in a single grain of sand. [Verse 2] One grain slips, another stays. Some get buried on the way. Some are rough, and some are small, some don't seem to fit at all. But little hands don't ask them why, don't hold each one up to the light. They gather everything they find— and somehow, all the pieces rhyme. [Pre-Chorus — violins begin to connect] You can look as close as you like. Count every edge. Measure every side. But sometimes you have to move away to see what you've made. [Chorus — wider] No grain knows it's making a mountain. No grain sees what we can see. Every one a little different, every one where it should be. You could hold one to the light and study everything you found— but you'll never find the mountain in a single grain of sand. [Bridge — everything drops] Maybe one grain isn't perfect. Maybe none of them are. [Pause] The child never asks. He just sees the mountain. [Children, very softly] The mountain. [Final Chorus — full harmony] No grain knows it's making a mountain. Maybe that's the beauty of it all. Nothing here was made to stand alone, nothing has to hold it all. Every strange and tiny difference, every piece you couldn't understand— was already part of something beautiful. You just had to see the sand. [Post-Chorus — children] Grain by grain, hand in hand. You won't find the whole inside one grain of sand. Grain by grain, hand in hand— look how something small became a mountain. [Outro — instruments disappear one by one] Someone calls the child home. He stands. Looks back. The mountain leans a little. He smiles anyway. [Opening piano motif returns] One note. Another. Another. [Children hum together] And this time— [final resolving note] he leaves the light off.
