Distant mall ambience. Cheerful melody with a slightly eerie minor-note twist.] [PA announcement, distant] “Attention shoppers, the mall will be closing in ten minutes.” [Beat kicks in.] Yeah, okay. Ten minutes. Plenty of time. [VERSE 1 — FAST POP-RAP - Dry, conversational male vocal. Tight electronic drums, bouncing chiptune bass.] Locked in at eleven, Phone at two percent, Security's a voicemail, Guess that's where it went. Tried the doors — they're bolted. Tried the fire exit too. Found a chair, sat down, Nothing else to do. Then I saw her by the window, Looking better than the rest. Nice coat, terrible shoes — I told her, “You sure can dress.” She didn't say a word. Honestly, I liked that. [PRE-CHORUS - Add shimmering 16-bit synths and rising bass. Vocal becomes more melodic.] So I pulled up another chair, Said, “Mind if I sit here?” She didn't mind at all. She's a very good listener. [CHORUS - Bright, infectious pop melody. Layered vocals. Almost absurdly cheerful.] She's a mannequin, she's a mannequin, But she understands me. She's a mannequin, she's a mannequin, Best friend I ever had. She never talks behind my back, She never tells me no. She's a mannequin, she's a mannequin, So where else would I go? [VERSE 2 — FAST POP-RAP - More rhythmic. Add extra percussion and playful 16-bit counter-melodies.] Gave her a name — Veronica. Moved her to the chair. Put a scarf around her neck 'Cause she looked so cold there. Found a better pair of shoes, Changed her coat to blue. Introduced her to the others — “Veronica, this is Sue.” Sue was being difficult. Always has been, apparently. Veronica rolled her eyes. I said, “Don't start, honestly.” Then I found a little handbag, Thought she'd look divine. She didn't seem convinced, But she usually comes around in time. [PRE-CHORUS 2 - Harmony becomes slightly darker. Keep the upbeat rhythm.] We talked about the weather. We talked about my life. She asked me if I'm happy. I said, “Of course I'm fine.” [brief pause] I think I meant it. [CHORUS 2 - Same catchy melody, but slightly more manic vocal delivery.] She's a mannequin, she's a mannequin, And she understands me. She's a mannequin, she's a mannequin, She knows exactly what I need. She never walks away from me, She never shuts the door. She's a mannequin, she's a mannequin, I couldn't ask for more. [VERSE 3 — RAP, FASTER - Drums become more frantic. Bass more distorted. Chiptune melody begins looping obsessively.] Then Veronica got jealous. Said I spend too much with Sue. I told her, “That's ridiculous.” She said, “You know it's true.” Sue started looking smug. I could tell what she was doing. I said, “Don't encourage her.” She said, “I wasn't.” “YES, YOU WERE.” Silence. Then Veronica laughed. At least, I think she laughed. So I moved Sue to the corner, Where she couldn't cause a scene. Put a coat rack in between us — Now we're getting along beautifully. Bought three cups of coffee. Only needed one for me. But you should always bring your friends one. That's just basic courtesy. [BRIDGE — BREAKDOWN / RAP - Music suddenly drops to sub-bass, ticking percussion and distant chiptune notes. Vocal close, breathless, increasingly agitated.] Don't look at her like that. She wasn't talking to you. I know what you said. No — I heard you. Don't tell me she's not real. Of course she's real. She's right there. [beat] Right— There. [Music begins rapidly rebuilding.] Maybe you should apologize. No. Maybe I should apologize. Fine. I'm sorry. Are you happy now? [whisper] She says I'm forgiven. [FINAL CHORUS — HUGE / MANIC - Full 16-bit synth wall, pounding drums, distorted bass, soaring pop melody. Vocals euphoric and increasingly unstable. Backing vocals repeat “mannequin”.] She's a mannequin, she's a mannequin, But she understands me! She's a mannequin, she's a mannequin, She's everything I need! She never talks behind my back, She never tells me no! She's a mannequin, she's a mannequin, And now she's coming home! She's a mannequin, she's a mannequin, We're gonna be alright! She's a mannequin, she's a mannequin, We're getting out tonight! The doors are opening! The sun is coming through! She's a mannequin— She's a mannequin— And I think she wants me too— [OUTRO - Everything suddenly becomes bright and cheerful again. Morning mall ambience. Soft 16-bit melody.] [PA announcement] “Good morning. The shopping centre is now open.” [Narrator, completely calm] Come on, girls. We're going home. [End]
