Swamp Fire

I walked through the doors of a smoke-filled cantina, Moon on the bayou, the night burning red. She stood at the bar with a smile like a fever, One look at her eyes and my reason was dead. Swamp fire, wild desire, Burns a man down to the bone. In the shadows, hearts conspire, But no fire ever burns alone. I came in behind him, the floorboards were creaking, The whiskey was flowing, the music ran high. There in the corner, the girl I’d been seeking, But she raised her glass with another guy. I said, “She was mine before you ever knew her.” I swore, “She was mine from the day she was born.” We argued like thunder, our voices grew truer, Until she broke down with her tears full of scorn. Swamp fire, wild desire, Burns a man down to the bone. In the shadows, hearts conspire, But no fire ever burns alone. The tables were scattered, the bottles were breaking, We cursed one another with blood in our eyes. The pistols came flashing, the ground started shaking, She screamed out our names with a heart-shattered cry. I fell to the floor with her face in my memory. My last breath was calling the sound of her name. Two foolish lovers with nothing but jealousy, Dying together in one final flame. Swamp fire, wild desire, Burned us down right to the bone. In her shadow, hearts expired, And no fire ever dies alone.
