LEAVE ME BE - Song 2, ACT 1
[Intro] When I drink, I drink real grey goose... Tonight I had one more than too many... Loose lips and all... [Verse 1] Ice machine coughin' in the back again Corona Light signs buzzin' by the window fan Danny rolled in loud from a double shift Burnt steel smell with a whiskey itch [Pre-Chorus] He said, “Sis, why you so lost in thought?" I told him Victor just paid for stuff he ain't bought All that staggerin' around he does is well thought Then he pointed with his shot glass drippin' Maybe Victor needs a southern boy whippin' [Chorus 1] Victor just smiled, but never looked up Waitin' on something, that nobody could trust Danny starts moving towards him unbuttoning his shirt Victor grinned big, clean white teeth in a room full of hurt I thought I just blew up the bar Danny likes fightin' and now here we are I try to grab him, try to steady his mood But Danny wanted Victor out howlin' at the moon Victor just sat and sipped on his drink And told him, "Some learn to float. Some just sink." "Danny, I ain't hurtin' nothin'. Just leave me be." [Post-Chorus] Pay no mind to Victor at the end of the bar More Water on the rocks is where we are [Verse 2] Danny grumbled, “Hell, I'll prove it true See where golden boy always slips off to.” Slammed a shot, took his keys and headed out the door Nodded once at me while Victor looked at the floor Victor never looked, never turned his head Just lit a smoke and laughed instead Dropped a hundred in the jar by my hand Said, “Keep the change, Sis... slow night again?” [Bridge] Three nights gone and the bar stayed thin Rain came hard off the highway bridge Then Monday night near closing time Danny came back in Same coat zipped up to his chin Split lip healing, thousand-yard grin Wouldn't touch the stool where Victor sat Wouldn't answer where the hell he'd been at [Pre-Chorus] I said, “Danny...” He said, “Leave me be.” Drank his shot silently. Then leaned real close while a live band played Said, “Some times even I ain't got nothin' to say.” [Chorus 2] Victor just smiled, but never looked up Waitin' on something, that nobody could trust Danny sits frozen, won't unbutton his shirt Victor grinned big, clean white teeth in a room full of hurt I thought I just blew up the bar Danny's done fightin' and now here we are I try to ask him, try to steady his mood But Danny's seen the wolf out howlin' at the moon Victor just sat and sipped on his drink And told him, "Some learn to float. Some just sink." [Outro] Last call. Chairs up. Mop bucket by the door. Victor came in late that night. Later than before. No grin. No stumble. No fake Grey Goose on ice. Just set his hat down soft and said: “Danny won't be coming by.” Then he slid a folded envelope, slow across the bar. And for the first time since I met him... I noticed both his hands were scarred.
