[Verse 1] He turned 17 the day his best friend died And if he hangs around the hood He'd never see 25 But he's getting out of here tonight Thinks he's finally got it right And it's a desperate move on a moonlit summer's night [Chorus] He put 'em away, put the gun's away tonight Yes, he put him away, the neighborhood was surprised It cost his best friend his life But he's getting out alive [Refrain] And it's a desperate move on a moonlit summer's night [Verse 3] It was a crowded street by a dirty little hotel bar They were dressed to kill, but they never took it quite this far He and Tommy made a dreadful pair 'Til the gunfire filled the air [Refrain] Another desperate move on a moonlit summer's night [Verse 4] A car from hell opened with a fiery flood He blinked his eyes, he was covered by a dead man's blood He'll never forget that sight Or the last thing Tommy said that night [Refrain] He said, "Put 'em away, but the gun's away tonight" [Chorus] It took his best friend's life To get him out alive So he put 'em away, he put the guns away tonight It's a desperate move on a moonlit summer's night [Refrain] In a world full of desperate moves One finally got to groove [Outro] And he put 'em away, he put the guns away tonight Yes, he put 'em away, he put the guns away tonight
