THE BRAIN WAS NOT BUILT FOR THIS

V5.5

You know… my grandmother worried about wolves. My mother worried about war. And me? I wake up every morning and fight seventeen notifications, three conspiracy theories, two cat videos, and a stranger who’s angry about something I don’t even understand. Somewhere along the way they handed us these little glowing machines and convinced us that anxiety was information. Now everybody’s talking. Nobody’s listening. And somehow we call scrolling “taking a break.” Maybe my brain wasn’t built for this. Maybe yours wasn’t either. So before we drown in one more wave of noise… let’s sing about it. They gave me a little black mirror and said baby, this is the world. But my poor old brain was built for fire, rain, danger in the grass, and one damn voice at a time. Now everybody’s screaming. And somehow I’m supposed to call it rest. I woke up tired with the sunrise dead forty little sirens dancing in my head Mama said breathe but the screen said run somebody’s angry somebody’s done I was born for thunder I was born for touch not a thousand voices all saying too much My brain was not built for this no no no not built for this give me one true kiss not another nervous hit My heart wants love my hand wants the phone Lord, I’m crowded when I’m all alone They sell me panic wrapped up as news fear wears lipstick and algorithm shoes Everybody’s clapping so I clap there too then I ask myself was that even true? If the crowd says fire I can smell the smoke if my tribe says devil I repeat the joke My brain was not built for this no no no not built for this give me one slow song not another poisoned click My soul wants silence my thumb wants war Lord, I came for peace and bought the store One hundred fifty seconds then seventy-five now forty little seconds just to feel alive I call it resting but I’m feeding the machine scrolling through the wreckage of a human dream Hey hey who stole my morning? Hey hey who sold my mind? Hey hey I was looking for heaven and got trapped online My brain was not built for this no no no not built for this but I’m still here, baby still swinging my fist Turn down the noise let the old blood sing one real breath is a dangerous thing My brain was not built for this no no no not built for this but my heart still knows what the machine can’t fix
