Naked on Stage

[verse] Everybody like the risqué And everybody like the fun and games Everybody like the smell of sex and perfume And when the lights go down in my bedroom I can sing about a broken home I can write about feeling alone I can tell you how I’m scared to grow old And how it feels to sell your soul [pre-chorus] But the tears you’ll skip The scars you won’t see All you want from this armor Is to take it off me [chorus] So I dance around the pain I sing around the rage Give ’em what they came to see Which is me, on my knees Naked on the stage Letting you see everything Just to disengage [verse] I sing about desire You think I mean sex I sing about a person You just wanna know the specs I got notebooks full of better songs Pages where the sound belongs There the real stuff lives and breathes Little pieces you’ll never see [pre-chorus] My skin is too hard My heart is too soft I keep building up armor And you want me to take it off [chorus] So I dance around the pain I sing around the rage Give ’em what they came to see Which is me, on my knees Naked on the stage Watching you grovel From the altar in my cage [bridge] Maybe that’s the trick of it all Walls painted brightly to hide when I fall Innuendo to distract you Or just flesh when that fails Carve out what you want from me As long as there’s sales I’ll write it in blood if I have to ‘Cuz you won’t look further in The medium’s the message When it’s carved into my skin [final chorus - intensity and anger of the vocals increase until the breaking point] So I dance around the pain I scream through all the rage Feed you what you came to see Every piece of me Naked on the stage Selling you access So the blood lust is assuages So I dance around the pain I spit out all this rage Drown you in the thing you need Till you choke on what you feed Naked on the stage Naked on the stage I am naked on stage [outro - vocals return to normal] I sing about desire The public’s the buyer They get what they want They get what they want Fuck everything else They get what they want
