Funny how a shade of skin becomes a line in the sand, Then they point you at your neighbour while they tighten their hand. Keep the people busy fighting over colour and creed, Nobody checks who's planting all the poisonous seed. They manufacture fractures, package panic for profit, Put a label on a stranger, then convince you to stop him. Divide it, ignite it, provide you a side, While everybody's fighting, somebody profits from the divide. But hunger doesn't care what complexion you possess, And grief won't check your passport when it's sitting on your chest. Same rent due, same fear when the bank says no, Same kid with a dream saying, "Please don't go." Different tongue, different clothes, different shade upon the grain, But the whole field bends together when it's battered by the rain. What's superior when every beating heart needs air? Strip away the surface and the human need is there. Don't inherit somebody else's enemy, Don't make bitterness your identity. Before you carry hatred as your fate, Ask who profits when they teach us to separate. We're different shades of wheat in the very same field, Same wounds underneath, same scars that can heal. Same wanting to be loved, same wanting to be free, Don't hate somebody just because they taught you to believe. Know your own mind, don't borrow their rage, Don't let another man's hatred put your heart in a cage. Different colour, country, culture or creed Different shades of wheat, grown from the same seed. Prejudice travels through families like furniture, Nobody knows who bought it, still they swear that it's permanent. Granddad said this, then your father said that, Now you're wearing old anger like an inherited hat. But tradition ain't truth 'cause it's endlessly stated, A lie can live forever if it's never interrogated. Yesterday that's your neighbour, your colleague, your friend, Then a headline draws a border where the friendship should end. That's the trick make the ordinary citizen dangerous, Keep the architects of anger comfortably anonymous. Bottom fighting bottom while they're scrambling for scraps, Nobody looking upward asking who designed the trap. Question every slogan when emotion is attached, If hatred is required, maybe hatred is the catch. I won't judge a million strangers by the worst one that I saw, That's surrendering your reason while pretending that it's law. Before you hate somebody you've never even met, Ask whose voice is speaking in your head. Is it yours? Or an echo you inherited? You can inherit a story. You don't have to keep repeating it. Don't be led by the hate of the people that you know, Love them, but examine every poison that they sow. You can honour where you're from and still challenge what was taught, Being loyal doesn't mean surrendering your thought. Make your own decisions, let the evidence decide, Keep compassion in the courtroom when your anger testifies. Different histories and faces underneath one atmosphere, And the easiest crowd to control is one divided by its fear. We want safety for our children, food and somewhere we belong, Someone there to understand us when the whole world's going wrong. Same dreams behind the windows, though the curtains don't agree, We're branches shaped by circumstance upon one human tree. Your mind is yours. Your judgement is yours. Different shades. Same field. Same rain. Same sun.
