16. I Raised My Voice with Theirs | Moby-Dick Act II: The Captain’s Purpose

V6

[The Scene] After Starbuck challenges Ahab and Ahab refuses every argument against the hunt, the tension on the quarter-deck turns into collective commitment. The crew answer their captain with growing excitement, and Ishmael finds himself swept up in the same force. He recognises the danger in surrendering his own judgement, yet still chooses to raise his voice with the others. What began as Ahab's private obsession has now spread through the ship, binding the crew to a purpose they do not yet understand and carrying Ishmael with them into the hunt for Moby Dick. [Verse 1] I heard his purpose thunder through the air, And felt the crew rise answering him there. A single cry rolled out across the sea, And something in that cry took hold of me. [Verse 2] I knew the warning written in Starbuck's face, Yet still I felt the pull of that dark chase. The captain's will had gathered like a tide, And for one breath I let it be my guide. [Chorus] I raised my voice with theirs and felt it rise, A shout beneath the cold unbounded skies. I knew that I was yielding judgement's claim, Yet still I joined the cry and spoke his name. [Verse 3] No chain was laid upon my hand or tongue, No threat compelled the words that I had sung. I chose the fever moving through the crew, And let their fierce conviction claim me too. [Verse 4] The gold still flashed above us on the mast, A bright reward that bound us to the past. But more than gold was burning in the air, Ahab's unbending purpose held us there. [Chorus] I raised my voice with theirs and felt it rise, A shout beneath the cold unbounded skies. I knew that I was yielding judgement's claim, Yet still I joined the cry and spoke his name. [Verse 5] I came to seek the sea and wander free, To leave the narrow streets that burdened me. Yet freedom can be yielded without chain, When many voices drown the quieter strain. [Verse 6] I saw the white whale only through his eyes, A shape he cast across the sea and skies. I felt the danger and the grandeur blend, And raised my voice though I could not see the end. [Chorus] I raised my voice with theirs and felt it rise, A shout beneath the cold unbounded skies. I knew that I was yielding judgement's claim, Yet still I joined the cry and spoke his name. [Outro] The cry fell back, yet echoed through the night, And left the darkened deck with borrowed might. I had not lost myself, but something changed, My judgement by another will arranged.
