[Verse] We were running through the pasture, laughing as we ran, because the neighbor's billy goat had decided we were his plan. He came charging down behind us, and we didn't stop to see, we made it to the old barn door and pulled it shut behind us quickly. We climbed up through the hayloft, still trying not to laugh, listening for his footsteps somewhere down below. [Pre-Chorus] We were still laughing, trying to catch our breath, with hay dust on our clothes trying to see him through the cracks. [Chorus] The barn across the neighbor's field. The barn where a frightened afternoon turned into something real. We went there just to hide, we never planned to stay, but something happened in that hayloft I still remember to this day. The barn where we finally got away. Up in the hay, out of the sun, laughing about what we had just outrun. The barn The barn [Verse] There was hay beneath our backs, dust floating in the light, and neither one of us was in a hurry to go outside. We talked about nothing, but somehow talked for hours, while the afternoon kept moving through the gaps between the boards. I don't remember who moved closer, or who stopped talking first, I only know the next thing I remember was your lips against mine, and my heart burst. [Pre-Chorus] No music, no perfect words, no one around to see. Just we two in the old hayloft and our first kiss in a place we never meant to be. [Chorus] The barn across the neighbor's field. The Barn where we went to hide and found something else instead. I can still remember the dust, the heat, the wooden floor, and how that little hayloft became something more. The barn I never knew I’d carry it for years. One stupid goat, one open door, I still remember for sure. The first kiss I never quite forgot. The barn [Verse] Years went by, and life moved on, and there were places I had never seen back then. Every time I visit my family and drive along those fields, I find myself looking sideways before I even realize I did. The pasture is still there, the road still bends the same, but when I look across the fence, there is no barn to see again. [Bridge] They took it down sometime, I don't even know exactly when. and nothing marks where it had been. If someone stopped me there today, I'd have nothing I could show. Just a field beside the road and a place I used to know. But memory doesn't need a roof or walls to keep a place alive. I can still climb those wooden stairs every time I close my eyes. And maybe that's why I always look across that field. Not because I expect to find it, but because some places never really disappear. [Final-Chorus] The barn across the neighbor's field. The Barn that isn't standing there but somehow still feels real. I can see us in the hayloft, hear us laughing like before, feel that first kiss in the place that isn't anymore. The barn was only wood, hay and an old floor, but it holds a piece of who we were that I don't want to lose. The barn My fondest memory, my daydream I often choose. Across the field... I still imagine it. The barn... Our barn... The barn...
