Carrots and ginger, onions too, butter in the pan, then broth went through. He let it simmer, soft and slow, until the pumpkin lost its glow. He blended everything smooth and bright, then stirred three times clockwise, just right. [Verse 2 – The Ritual] Coconut milk, salt, pepper, Reaper, soy sauce, lemon juice, stir it deeper. A pinch of this, a little more, just like the recipe from before. When October's Harvest Moon is high, the veil grows thin between the worlds tonight. Three times clockwise, three times back, salt the doors and windows, keep evil off the track. Never look behind you when you hear a sound, some things from the other world walk around. The soup was steaming, rich and sweet, a perfect meal, a perfect treat. [Verse 3 – Halloween] He took one spoonful. His face went pale. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He gasped for air. She raised her crystal glass, dark red liquid catching the light. She smiled. Then silence. Ding-dong. “Trick or treat!” She opened the door, gave the children candy, laughed at their costumes, and wished them all a Happy Halloween. She came back inside. He was still gasping for air. “Next year?” “Never again.” She smiled. “We'll see.” [Outro] She lifted her glass again. Outside, children laughed in the October night. “The soup was delicious.”
