[Spoken Word, Announcer] The authorship of this next song is unknown, but we know it dates back to at least the 1870s as the lyrics reference of "Joe Brown's coal mine" point to this era in Georgia. The song originated in the Southern Appalachian region, it is a "murder ballad" or "blues ballad" characterized by its dark, haunting lyrics about unfaithfulness and a decapitation on the railroad. The First published lyrics was collected by Cecil Sharp in 1925, and the first recording on a wax cylinder was in 1926. It's a song that's well known by, believe it or not, five different titles!
