40. The Coffin and the Open Sea | Act V: The Chase and the Silence
[The Scene] With Ahab dead and the Pequod swallowed by the sea, Ishmael emerges from the wreckage to find himself alone upon the open water. Surrounded by the vast silence left by the destruction, he discovers the floating coffin originally made for Queequeg during his illness and later transformed into a life-buoy. Clinging to this final reminder of his closest friend, Ishmael survives the long hours adrift, remembering the men whose lives have been lost and the voyage that brought them together. At last, the Rachel, whose desperate request for help Ahab had refused, discovers him while continuing her search for her captain’s missing son. Rescued as the Pequod’s sole survivor, Ishmael carries the memory of his companions and the terrible consequences of Ahab’s obsession. His journey ends not in triumph, but in survival, grief and the responsibility of remembering those who will never return. [Verse 1] I watched the Pequod sink beneath the foam, The ship that once had promised passage home. Her broken spars lay scattered on the tide, And silence spread where all my shipmates died. [Verse 2] I broke the surface, gasping for the air, And saw a wooden shape come drifting there. The coffin made when Queequeg lay near death, Now held me up and gave me back my breath. [Chorus] The coffin bears me on the open sea, And I recall the man who trusted me. I cannot bring the lost ones back to shore, But I will bear their names for evermore. [Verse 3] The darkness came; the sea grew black and wide, The coffin lifted gently with the tide. I thought of men who'd never reach the shore, And heard their voices in my mind once more. [Verse 4] I saw the inn where first we shared the night, And watched my fear give way to morning light. I felt the rope that linked us through the spray, The trust he gave me on that distant day. [Chorus] The coffin bears me on the open sea, And I recall the man who trusted me. I cannot bring the lost ones back to shore, But I will bear their names for evermore. [Verse 5] At dawn I saw a sail beyond the spray, The Rachel's boat came slowly down my way. Her captain sought his son across the sea, Yet all her searching sailors found was me. [Verse 6] Her sailors lifted me from wind and foam, But none who sailed beside me journeyed home. They warmed my hands and gave me time to rest, While grief lay like an anchor in my chest. [Chorus] The coffin bears me on the open sea, And I recall the man who trusted me. I cannot bring the lost ones back to shore, But I will bear their names for evermore. [Outro] Call me Ishmael, I once sought the sea, To leave the empty streets and wander free. Now I must carry all the lives I knew, And tell their story till my days are through.
