[Verse 1] I went to buy a window latch And found you studying shades of blue You held three samples to the glass And asked which one I'd choose I said the lightest looked like morning You said, my sister picked that too The clerk was weighing out my screws While I kept finding things to ask you [Pre-Chorus] I nearly bought a second latch For windows I don't even have [Chorus] The hardware store waltz One, two, three down the aisle A little blue card in your hand And that troublemaking smile We could take the long way home Let the paint wait one more day The hardware store waltz Has my feet going your way [Verse 2] We walked past the flower stand You told me that the room was yours You'd paint it Saturday alone Unless I didn't have much planned I brought the lemonade I promised And dropped one brush into the tray You painted one blue thumbprint On my shirt and said, now stay [Chorus] The hardware store waltz One, two, three down the aisle A little blue card in your hand And that troublemaking smile We could take the long way home Let the paint wait one more day The hardware store waltz Has my feet going your way [Instrumental - fiddle and lap steel waltz, eight bars] [Bridge] By sundown all your walls were blue My latch was still inside its sack You asked if I could dance a waltz I said, I'll fix it when I get back [Final Chorus] The hardware store waltz One, two, three through the room My window still won't close quite right But I'm not leaving here too soon We can take the long way home When the paint is put away The hardware store waltz Has my feet going your way [Outro] That pale blue card is in my wallet Beside a receipt for one small latch.
