Ring the Bells
Da-da-da da-da-da daaa— Oh the frost has teeth and the cobblestones sing, When the lamplight flickers and the choirs take wing! In a town that creaks like a ship at sea, Where the windows hum in a minor key, There’s a story stitched in the chimney smoke, With a laugh that rattles and a heart that broke. Stockings sway on the mantle rail, While the north wind writes its ghostly tale, And the baker hums as the kettles ring— It’s a curious, furious, glorious thing! So gather round, you rogues and sprites, You candle-wicks and frosty nights, For time itself will tap its cane— And knock on memory once again! Ring the bells and turn the page, Let the holly crown the stage! Clap your mittens, stomp your feet, Hear the past and present meet! With a hey-nonny-no and a tra-la-lee, It’s a topsy-turvy jubilee! Raise the rafters, let it be— It’s the grand Christmas revelry! There’s a ledger cold as a winter spoon, And a pocket watch that hums out of tune, But even stone can learn to bend, When a midnight knock begins to mend. From the counting house to the lantern’s glow, Through the swirling silver of drifting snow, Every grumble, every sigh, Has a star tucked under the sky. (Softly now…) Hush—hear the whisper in the wreath, Hear the promise underneath, Even the sternest clockwork heart Can find a brighter part. For mercy hums in velvet tones, Through brittle pride and brittle bones! Fa-la-la the frost away! Ha-ha-ha the gloom at bay! Spin the snow like sugared glass— Let no lonely shadow pass! Ring the bells and turn the page, Let compassion set the stage! Clap your mittens, stomp your feet, Feel the bitter turn to sweet! With a hey-nonny-no and a tra-la-lee, Throw wide the door and set hearts free! Raise the rafters, let it be— It’s the grand Christmas revelry! Da-da-da da-da-da daaa— When the morning paints the eaves, Hope is tucked in winter sleeves…
