Love Without Possession

V6

[Intro - fully spoken, intimate male voice, quiet piano] There is a phrase I hear often. "If you love me, you will accept me." And there is truth in that. You are worthy of love now. But somewhere along the way, we added something else. "If you love me, you must accept everything I do." [pause] That is not the same thing. [soft cello enters] Love does not require blindness. Love does not look at a wound and call it healthy because the truth might hurt. Sometimes love says, "Stop." Sometimes love says, "This is hurting you." And sometimes love risks being misunderstood because silence would be easier. [pause] God's love does not disappear when we make a terrible choice. There may be consequences. There may be correction. But love remains. His commandments do not prove that He loves us less. They exist because He sees farther down the road than we do. We see desire. He sees where it leads. And still, He gives us agency. God will warn us, teach us, and invite us... but He will not force us. Because love without agency is possession. And God did not create possessions. He created children. [strings rise gently] Christ did not come to tell us that nothing needed changing. If nothing needed changing, why repentance? Why forgiveness? Why Gethsemane? Christ came because we needed saving. Not because we were worthless. Because we were worth saving. [soft bell] Repentance is not God saying, "Become better, and then I will love you." It is God saying, "I love you. So you do not have to remain here." You do not have to remain what anger made you. What fear made you. What pride made you. What yesterday made you. Grace is not permission to remain chained. It is power to rise. [piano grows warmer] And disagreement is not always hatred. I can love you and disagree with you. I can forgive you and still admit that you hurt me. I can respect your agency without pretending every choice is wise. I can walk beside you without following you everywhere. Those are not the same promise. [pause] We sometimes imagine divine love as endless approval. But God cares about who we are becoming. So when Heaven says, "Change..." do not hear, "You are hated." When Heaven says, "Repent..." do not hear, "You are unwanted." When Heaven says, "Come back..." listen more carefully. Perhaps Heaven is saying, "You have been gone long enough." [hand bells enter softly] There is mercy. There is forgiveness. Christ's hands are still extended. But an extended hand must eventually be taken. Grace opens the way. Agency chooses whether we follow it. And if you fall? Rise. If you fail again? Repent. If you are ashamed to face God? Face Him anyway. Your weakness was never hidden from Heaven. And still... the Savior went to Gethsemane. [pause] That is love. Love strong enough to tell the truth. Patient enough to wait. Merciful enough to forgive. And powerful enough to change us. [music begins fading] So come as you are. Come tired. Come confused. Come wounded. Come carrying yesterday. Come as you are. [very softly] But do not be surprised when Christ loves you enough to ask you not to stay that way. [final hand bell] Rise.
