Opera, Arts and Donuts (The Grand Tour S01E03)
[Intro] (Elegant, classical violin intro playing an Italian melody, suddenly interrupted by a roaring V8 engine and a heavy rock guitar riff) [Verse 1] The harbor of Whitby is cold and very grey The big white tent is standing by the windy northern bay The home crowd is cheering, they are back on British ground But the stories that they tell tonight have a Mediterranean sound [Verse 2] A classic Grand Tour is what they want to do To see the art and culture, the history so true They travel down to Italy, where the sun is shining bright To drive across the landscape in the golden summer light [Verse 3] Jeremy chooses elegance, the British racing green An Aston Martin DB11, the finest ever seen With a twin-turbo V12, it glides along the road A perfect grand tourer to carry culture's load [Verse 4] And James arrives in luxury, a moving silver palace A Rolls-Royce Dawn convertible, built without any malice He wants to feel the breeze, he wants to see the view To live the quiet lifestyle like the upper classes do [Verse 5] They drive through beautiful Tuscany, the gravel roads are sweet They think this intellectual trip is a very special treat But a dark cloud is coming, a loud and smoky storm A piece of modern madness in an old historic form [Verse 6] Richard Hammond appears, with a loud and wicked scream In a bright red Dodge Hellcat, the anti-cultural dream Seven hundred horsepower, a supercharged V8 He doesn't care for art, he only wants the straight [Verse 7] They arrive in historic Florence, the cradle of the past James wants to look at paintings, but Richard drives too fast While Jeremy looks at statues with an educated stare Hammond revs the Hellcat engine, shaking up the air [Verse 8] In the middle of the Piazza, where the ancient poets walked The tires start to screech and smoke, while the locals looked and talked Richard is spinning circles, making rubber donuts round Leaving black burnt marks upon the holy ground [Verse 9] Jeremy is furious, and James is filled with shame They try to look sophisticated, but Hammond ruins the game He wears his cowboy boots, he wants his fast food quick This elegant Italian tour has turned into a trick [Verse 10] They escape into the countryside, towards the southern track The Aston and the Rolls-Royce try to push the Hellcat back But on the long straight asphalt, the American muscle flies Leaving a cloud of smoke beneath the blue Italian skies [Verse 11] They visit the Mugello circuit, to see what they can do To test the heavy luxury cars against the red and blue The Aston slides with grace, the Rolls-Royce leans a lot But Hammond's tires melt away, because the track is hot [Verse 12] They head into Verona, the city of romance Where Romeo and Juliet once took a tragic chance Jeremy and James have tickets to the opera tonight They dress up in their finest suits, looking clean and bright [Verse 13] The opera singer hits a note, so beautiful and high The music fills the ancient arena under the evening sky But outside in the street, a familiar sound breaks in The supercharger whine begins, a loud and noisy sin [Verse 14] Hammond is in the parking lot, doing donuts once again He doesn't like the opera, it gives his head a pain The operatic music mixes with the tire scream A chaotic performance, like a petrolhead's weird dream [Verse 15] Back in the Whitby tent, the crowd is laughing loud At how the little Hamster managed to shock the cultured crowd Jeremy sighs deeply, James says it was a disgrace To bring a noisy muscle car into that holy place [Verse 16] The studio screen is changing, the lap times must be shown The autonomous BMW is left out on its own Simon Pegg drops by, but things go wrong as usual here He falls into the harbor water, disappearing near [Verse 17] The third adventure ends, the sun is going down From the culture of Italia to the rainy English town The Aston, the Rolls, and the smoky Hellcat crew Have finished up another grand and crazy tour for you [Outro] (Symphonic choir sings high opera notes, blending into a final, massive rock guitar solo, ending with a tire screech sound)
