[Verse 1] I set the microphones beneath the red and white. An old brass band was tuning to my right. A woman with a service ribbon pinned upon her blue Said she'd brought her grandson for the music, too. [Verse 2] The speaker said the country had been stolen from us all. He said he was the answer to its fall. Then pointed to the woman when she questioned what he'd said: “If you're against me, you're against the flag instead.” [Chorus] The flag forgot our names; It only knew his own. You either praised the man it served Or stood outside alone. [Verse 3] Two men approached and told her she should leave. Her grandson caught the fabric of her sleeve. She took his little fingers, led him slowly through the crowd. The speaker waited till the clapping drowned her out. [Chorus] The flag forgot our names; It only knew his own. You either praised the man it served Or stood outside alone. [Bridge] I wore that uniform for years. It doesn't mean I cannot disagree. The oath I took was never yours. You don't get to decide who counts as free. [Final Chorus] The flag forgot our names; It only knew his own. You either praised the man it served Or stood outside alone. [Outro] The cloth above us hadn't changed. (But who it sheltered had.)
