The Captain of Aisle Three
--- Going back to the quirky foundation that the Persona was built on. In this case it's about running into the "Star Quarterback" from the old football team. The one that was pretty much a jerk to everyone and doesn't seem able to let go of the glories of the past. Even though everyone else has moved on, he's still "Stuck" and is now working at the local grocery store, still trying to wow people with stories of the past. The interaction shows how much the person moving forward has grown, compared to someone that can't stop trying to trade on past memories. Wanted to make the song a bit "lighter" and not too negative towards the individual. Getting close to wrapping up the "album". Just a couple more songs to go! ~David --- [Musical Introduction] [Shopping cart rattles → barcode beeps → mellow bass groove slides in] [Verse 1] [Male Vocals Ned – conversational, observant] Rolling through the frozen foods Thinking ‘bout absolutely nothing new Then I hear a voice I used to know— Same old story, same old show “Man, you should’ve seen that play— Fourth and inches, won the day” He’s telling it to aisle fourteen Like it just hit the local news this week [Pre-Chorus] Name tag slightly peeling off Still flexing like he’s going pro But the scoreboard faded years ago… And nobody’s keeping score [Chorus - smooth, lightly ironic] He’s the captain of aisle 3 Bagging up what used to be Every story, every claim— Still trying to replay the game Captain of aisle 3 Talking loud but no one sees It’s not the fall, it’s what you keep— And he’s holding on too deep [Verse 2] [Male Vocals - Spider + Ned interplay] [Male Vocals - Spider - cool, grounded] Self-checkout line, he clocks me in Does a double take, that old grin [Male Vocals - Ned] “Hey, you remember me, right man?” Yeah… I remember who you were back then [Male Vocals - Spider] Tried to crack a joke at my expense [Male Vocals - Ned] But it lands somewhere… irrelevant [Male Vocals - Both] Not sharp, not mean, just kinda tired— Living life like their future has expired [Pre-Chorus] Talks about the offers he “almost had” Blames the coach, the refs, the bad But life don’t run on “almost” plays… It moves on anyway [Chorus - slightly fuller] He’s the captain of aisle 3 Stacking bags of memory Every highlight, every peak— Still echoing every week Captain of aisle 3 Living in “remember me?” It’s not where you land, it’s how you leave— And he never really leaves [Musical Interlude] [Spider lays a smooth bass line; Anaconda builds rhythm from cart wheels, bag crinkles, barcode beeps; Ned adds light guitar licks; vibe stays relaxed, observational] [Bridge - Female Vocals - empathetic, grounded] Maybe it’s hard to let it go When that’s the only self you know Maybe the silence feels too loud… Without the noise of being the crowd [soft pause] But who you were at seventeen… Isn’t who you’re meant to be [Breakdown] [just bass + checkout beeps] [Male Vocals - Ned - Soft] Guess we both checked out… in different ways [Final Chorus - gentle closure] He’s the captain of aisle 3 But that’s not who I have to be I let go of what used to sting— Turns out it was never everything Captain of aisle 3 Still chasing who he used to be And I almost feel the sympathy… Then I see how he treats people… and I leave [Outro] Receipt in hand, I walk outside Didn’t need to win that night Some things shrink when you outgrow fear… Guess he just… stayed right here [cart wheel fades… soft bass note ends] [Musical Ending] [Fade Out]
