11. My Tambourine Will Answer | Moby-Dick Act II: The Captain’s Purpose

V6

[The Scene] As life aboard the Pequod settles into its daily rhythm, Pip brings a lighter presence to the deck. Younger and less experienced than the men around him, he entertains the crew with his tambourine and tries to match their confidence at sea. Beneath his cheerful music, however, he feels the distance from home and the immense scale of the ocean around him. For now, his music gives him a small sense of control and belonging, masking a vulnerability that the voyage has not yet tested. [Verse 1] I tap the skin and hear the silver ring, A little sound can make the timbers sing. The deck is wide, the sky is wider still, I keep the beat and bend it to my will. [Verse 2] The sailors smile and turn when rhythms start, I play them something bright from out my heart. They see me laugh and think I'm free from care, I keep the homesick ache from reaching air. [Chorus] My tambourine will answer when I call, Its silver voice will dance along the wall. When ocean makes me feel too small to see, I strike the beat and make it speak for me. [Verse 3] I watch the older sailors know their place, I copy what I can with willing grace. Their hands are sure through rope and wind and spray, I learn their ways and count another day. [Verse 4] At night the black sea stretches past the rail, I listen to the wind inside the sail. I think of rooms and voices left behind, Then shake the bells and drive them from my mind. [Chorus] My tambourine will answer when I call, Its silver voice will dance along the wall. When ocean makes me feel too small to see, I strike the beat and make it speak for me. [Verse 5] I may be young beside the seasoned crew, But I can keep a rhythm firm and true. If loneliness comes quietly with night, I answer it by making something bright. [Chorus] My tambourine will answer when I call, Its silver voice will dance along the wall. When ocean makes me feel too small to see, I strike the beat and make it speak for me. [Outro] So while the Pequod bears me from the shore, I'll sound my bells and let the rhythm soar. I cannot make the ocean less than wide, But I can keep a little song inside.
