[Verse 1] In an old oak tree Lived an owl at night Sleeping through the day Out of morning light Down among the grass Lived a grasshopper Singing loud and bright Never stopping once [Verse 2] “Good morning, Owl! Come and see the day!” Owl said, “Let me sleep. Please, just go away.” But the grasshopper Sang his song again: “Come and join the sun! Come outside, my friend!” [Chorus] Everybody’s got a time to sing Everybody’s got a time to sleep Wisdom means you know the time To talk — and when to keep Quiet [Verse 3] Owl said, “Friend, your song Sure is sweet to hear. Come a little closer. Sing it in my ear.” Grasshopper climbed up Hopping to the door. “Come inside,” said Owl. “Sing for me some more.” [Verse 4] Grasshopper went in, Singing all the way. Owl shut the door, And ended his play. The grasshopper learned Too late that day: A flattering owl May have a trick to play. [Final Chorus] Everybody’s got a time to sing Everybody’s got a time to sleep Wisdom means you know the time To talk — and when to keep Quiet [Outro] The grasshopper’s song Fell silent that night. The owl had his supper By pale moonlight. Sing your song beneath the sun, But listen when they warn: A careless tongue can lead you Where you should not have gone.
