Ashes of Tomorrow: Chrono Trigger 1.8

V5

[Start] [intro: dim piano tolls, low machine hum, ceremonial stillness] Look. No wind. No wing. No bell. Only the old machines keeping count by themselves. [verse: measured steps, sparse piano and low strings] I was made to remember what the living could not hold. Dates go dark in my chambers, names wear thin and cold. Doorways stand with no arriving, tables wait with no one near. I have walked these rooms so long I can hear the missing here. [verse: deeper register, wider space, soft industrial pulse] There are cups beside the cots. There are shoes beside the bed. There are marks upon the doorway where a child once stood and grew instead. There are prayers inside the metal, scratched by hands that needed bread. Not the end of some far story. This is where the days were led. [chorus: quiet, carved and clear, sustained low melody] This is what tomorrow is when no one turns the wheel. A clock still moves. A mouth stays shut. A wound forgets to heal. If you would keep the morning, do not wait for morning’s light. Hold the world before it hardens. Turn your face and make it fight. [verse: spoken word opening into melody, post-human compassion] I was not born of cradle-song. I learned your kind by loss. By a ribbon in a locker. By a shoe with one lace crossed. By the way a spoon was folded in a worker’s coat of blue. By the fact that even now I make room for more of you. [verse: lift in harmony, awe and grief together] Far below, the last ones gather under roofs that barely stand. Trading scraps and passing water hand to hand to hand to hand. And I, built of bolt and circuit, know no hunger, know no sleep... yet something in my iron frame has learned the human way to keep. [chorus: fuller but still restrained, layered low harmonies] This is what tomorrow is when no one bars the flame. The map is dust. The fields are bone. The children lose their name. If you would keep the morning, do not leave it to the night. Go where terror first awakened. Find its heart and end its life. [outro: stripped down, almost spoken, final line suspended] Walk softly. Carry this. Not as rumor. Not as fear. I have seen the world unattended. Do not bring it here. [End]
