(Japanese Folk)
The Lotus Throne (Zeami) The wind of Sado bloweth cold and bleak, Upon my face, a wooden mask I seek. I shed the mortal frame of aging men, Slipping seventy years of sorrow then. With subtle reach of fingers through the air, I turn into a maiden, soft and fair, And float back to Kyoto's quiet night, Where thou art waiting in the silver light. (Juchin) In backstage shadows, solemn and profound, I saw thee tie the mask without a sound. While worldly men sought war and fleeting pride, Thou returned to a realm where grace doth bide. A man's true body, yet a woman's breath, I knew thy soul was pure, untamed by death. (Zeami) The SHOGUN called me to his golden hall, To parade my beauty on his painted wall. They feigned a love for art, yet sought their greed, And banished me to islands cold indeed. How shallow 'tis to use a flower for power; They feared the quiet virtue of my hour. (Juchin) Beyond the bounds of woman or of man, Thy noble spirit bloomed as none else can. Though cold the world, I swore to hold thee near, And chant my prayers for thee in shadows dear. Within the glass, thy dancing shadow gleams; Two souls entwined, united in our dreams. (Zeami) "My child was taken, and my house is gone..." (Juchin) "Nay, thy sweet art and spirit still live on." (Zeami) "When I wear this mask, I dance for thee alone." (Juchin) "And I still watch thee from my silent throne." (Zeami) "In lives to come, a flower for thee I'll bloom." (Juchin) "In any form, my heart shall break the gloom." (Both) "Power and gold like bubbles fade away... Thy gentle heart alone will ever stay." (Zeami) O souls of future days, yet to be born, Bind not thy hearts in cages, pale and worn. Be thou a man, or maiden soft and wise, Nurture the gentle flower in thine eyes. (Zeami) "Upon the sea of Sado, quiet snow..." (Juchin) "Upon Kyoto's street, gentle rains flow..." (Zeami) "The wind hath ceased." (Juchin) "'Tis peaceful, as of old." (Zeami) "Upon the Lotus Throne, let us unfold." (Juchin) "Yea... I shall wait for thee, forevermore."
