III-XXXIV — ICE ISN'T ETERNAL [INTRO — COLD FRONTIER | 4/4 ~88 | LOW WOODEN FLUTE 1–2–4–5–♭7, NO 3RD | DREADNOUGHT | DISTANT DRUM] [MALE BARITONE — third-person throughout] [VERSE 1 — WORD FROM THE NORTH] The scouts came hard before noon, Horses white with foam. “Movement north.” Jack met them at the fence. “How many?” “Thousands. Maybe more.” “Dead?” “Don't think so.” “Pale Riders?” “No.” “What then?” The old woman appeared beside him. “Forest Folk.” Jack barely glanced her way. “I've nowhere to put refugees.” She looked almost offended. “They are not refugees.” Jack turned. “Then why are they coming?” “To join you.” [VERSE 2 — BEFORE THE DARK] [WOODEN FLUTE ALONE] She looked toward the northern hills. “We kept those forests before your counties had names. Before your ranches. Before your roads. The dead walked even then.” Jack: “The Long Dark?” “No. A corpse sometimes rose. Wandered. Harmless mostly. Sometimes troublesome. Never an army.” She paused. “Then one of us decided death should obey.” [VERSE 3 — THE SHAMAN] [RESONATOR ENTERS — ♭2→1] “Two thousand years ago, a shaman sought forbidden things. He believed the dead could be commanded.” Jack: “Could they?” “Yes.” [PAUSE] “That was the beginning.” The magic answered him. The dead obeyed. But every command changed the man who gave it. Bent him. Hollowed him. Until nothing remained of the shaman he had been. Only the Pale Lord. [VERSE 4 — HIS ARMY] He raised the dead and made them soldiers. Then made something worse. Pale Riders. Captains who could think. Could hunt. Could lead the dead to war. For generations the forests burned. Children inherited battles their grandparents had inherited. Jack: “How did it end?” The old woman shook her head. “It didn't.” [HARD STOP] [VERSE 5 — THE ICE] “After centuries we defeated him. Not killed. We could not kill him. So we carried him north. Farther than your maps go. To the ice at the top of the world.” They bound him there. Buried him deep. And called the war finished. The old woman looked at Jack. “We made a mistake.” “What mistake?” [PAUSE] “Ice isn't eternal.” [LOW DRUM] “It moves. It breaks. Sometimes— it melts.” [VERSE 6 — THREE HUNDRED YEARS] [LONG-DARK SCALE EMERGES] “He escaped three hundred years ago.” Jack stared at her. “Three hundred?” “We did not know at first. He learned patience. Gathered the dead slowly. Made new captains. Built his strength where no living eyes could see.” Jack looked north. “And now?” “Now he believes he is strong enough.” “To do what?” The old woman faced him. “Finish the war.” [VERSE 7 — TWELVE THOUSAND] A dark line appeared along the northern ridge. Not riders. People. Thousands. Jack: “How many?” “Twelve thousand.” “And they're all coming here?” “Yes.” “With what?” “Bows. Slings. Spears. Knives.” Jack rubbed his forehead. The old woman added: “Obsidian.” Jack stopped. “All of them?” “All.” [INSTRUMENTAL BUILD] [VERSE 8 — SARAH] Sarah came up beside them. Jack: “Twelve thousand people with bows and spears.” Sarah studied the approaching column. “So?” “So I'm trying to figure out what to do with them.” Sarah looked at him. “Put the archers behind the rifles.” Jack turned. She pointed toward the defensive line. “Rifles shoot straight. Bows don't have to. Neither do slings.” The old woman smiled. Sarah continued: “Spearmen reinforce the gaps. Knives for anyone who gets through.” Jack: “Against rifles they'd be slaughtered.” Sarah: “We aren't fighting rifles.” [HARD STOP] [VERSE 9 — THEIR WAR] The first Forest Folk came down from the ridge. Obsidian points caught the afternoon sun. Twelve thousand people walking south to meet an enemy they'd known for generations. Jack looked at the old woman. “You knew this was coming.” “Yes.” “Why didn't you tell me?” “You were not ready to hear it.” “And now?” She watched her people approach. “Now you have seen the dead.” [OUTRO — WESTERN + FOREST FOLK MOTIFS INTERLOCK] Ranch hands opened fences. Winter soldiers cleared the road. Sarah started making space before the first ranks reached them. Jack watched bows, slings, spears, black knives. Weapons from another age. Weapons made from the one thing the Pale Lord's army feared. The old woman stepped forward to meet her people. Jack called after her. “This is our fight too.” She turned. “No, Commander Snow.” [PAUSE] “It was ours first.” [WOODEN FLUTE — 1–2–4–5–♭7] [CUT]
