Just When I Found You
This little house on Donna Hill, Where neighbors came with such good will. A warm meal shared, a pipe repair, A helping hand was always there. My father left before his time, A hero's name that ranks so high. My mother kept this home somehow, When things were up, though mostly down. She saved this place through all her pain, Through summer snow; through wind and rain. She gave her best, she gave it all, To keep our lives within these walls. I learned from her what kindness meant, To give away what could be lent. A little time, a little care, A little hope when none was there. The neighbors gave what they could spare, A helping hand, a simple prayer. So I grew up believing too, That giving was the thing to do. Just when I found you, Just when I knew, A part of me I'd never known, A life that I could call my very own. You came along and changed my view, And showed me dreams I never knew. After all the years I gave away, Maybe I could have my own someday. You saw the girl behind the smile, And dreams I'd hidden all the while. You never asked me to be more, Than the girl who crossed the floor. And for the first time I could see, Tomorrow might belong to me. I've spent my life for others' days, Maybe I can have my own, some way. The man came up to our front door, With news we'd feared he'd bring before. The banker made his final claim, "You couldn't pay; I'm not to blame." Mother says that we'll be fine, We'll go where we can start again. To Grandma's farm so far away, But my heart will want to stay. How can fate be so unkind, To give me hope then change its mind? I spent my life putting others first, Now once again my heart will hurt. My mother needs me, that I know, The toll she's carried began to show. But somewhere deep inside it's true... I found the part I hid from view. Just when I found you, Just when I knew, A part of me I'd never known, A life that I could call my very own. If tomorrow takes me somewhere far, I'll still believe in who we are. The house on Donna Hill may fade, Not the girl behind the charade. I learned to give, I learned to care, And I never thought I'd find you there. Though familiar roads will soon be gone, That part of me will carry on. Just when I found you, Just when I knew, A part of me I'd never known, A life that I could call my very own.
