[drum beat and distorted bass enters] [Verse 1] The Commander liked to wander round, said leaders should be seen, He’d leave the office once a day to find out what things mean. He’d shake a hand and ask around, to show us that he cared, Then accidentally prove again, he hadn’t a clue out there. He found the station cleaner putting buckets in the bay, Said, "Good to see you Apu, I hope you're happy mate." The entire station cringed and the cleaner looked irate. [Pre-Chorus] [Build up with snare drums] 'Cause everybody knew the nickname, everybody knew the joke, The boss thought he was Springfield's favorite Kwik-E-Mart bloke! We’d never say it to his face, we played a quiet part, But the cleaner wasn't Apu, and he didn't run the Kwik-E-Mart! [Chorus] [Huge crowd vocals, massive energy] MAKE NO MISTAKE! I AM IN COMMAND! That’s what he’d shout with a flat white in his hand! MAKE NO MISTAKE! I KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON! Then he’d spend the next five minutes proving he was dead wrong! [Verse 2] The vice squad op was running hot, the charge room packed all day, The holding cells were bursting, spilling to the vehicle bay. The paperwork was stacking up halfway to Botany Bay, When the Commander strolled on down to see the big display. He spotted a woman smoking near the impounded cars, He marched on over, shook his head, and said, "Now listen, why do you persist? Why sell your body on the streets? Why live a life like this?" [Music cuts out - sudden silence] She looked at him bewildered, and she cleared her throat to say: "Sir... I work here, don't you recognise me? I just came down here for a smoke, to get through the day... Sir... I’m Jacqui. Your PA." [Band hits hard] [Crowd Ooooh] [Chorus] [Huge crowd vocals] MAKE NO MISTAKE! I AM IN COMMAND! That’s what he’d shout with a clipboard in his hand! MAKE NO MISTAKE! I KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON! Then he’d spend the next five minutes proving he was dead wrong! [Verse 3] Now nobody hated the Commander, and nobody thought him bad, Truth be told, he meant quite well, which somehow made it sad. He honestly believed that he was staying in the loop, But every time he left his desk, he landed in the soup. The cleaner wasn't Apu, Jacqui wasn't on the game, And every trip downstairs for him ended much the same. [Bridge] [Tempo slows slightly, heavy bassline] The further up the ladder, boys, the less of the floor you see, You start to love the spreadsheets more than human dignity. The Commander knew the metrics, and he knew the master plan, But the station couldn't work out if he knew a single man. [Guitar Solo] [Classic 80s Aussie pub rock guitar solo - ripping and energetic] [Breakdown] [Stripped back drums, bass, and clapping] "MAKE NO MISTAKE..." [Crowd shouts: "Oh, here we go!"] "I AM IN COMMAND!" [Crowd laughter and cheers] [Final Chorus] [Maximum energy, full band, crowd roaring] MAKE NO MISTAKE! I AM IN COMMAND! The words echoed proudly across the promised land! MAKE NO MISTAKE! I KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON! Then somebody would look around and whisper... "Does he, though?!" [Outro] The cleaner wasn't Apu, Jacqui wasn't on the game, But twenty years later, we're still singing out their names. Yeah, the boss remembered metrics... But we remembered the people! [Big final rock chord] [Fade out]
