Lyrics inspired by the movie, Moon (2009). Great watch if you haven't seen it. it starts with the teeth. it starts with the hair coming out in the comb, clumps of it circling the drain like spiderwebs. it starts with the feeling that i have stood in this exact spot, holding this exact cup, watching this exact shadow stretch across the crater. i am three years old and i am forty years old. i am breaking down on schedule. the warranty is up, the parts are wearing thin, the engine is coughing. i opened the closet and i saw the boxes. i saw the rows of vacuum-sealed bags. i saw the sleeping faces that were my face. i saw the inventory of tomorrow, stacked like cordwood, stacked like magazines, waiting to be read and thrown away. a fresh coat of paint for the same old machine. and i thought about the man who was here last week. i thought about the man who wore these boots before the leather cracked. he must have walked down this hallway with a light step. he must have packed his bag with such a delicate hope. he must have sat in the chair and closed his eyes and thought of the ocean. he walked into the fire thinking of the water. he walked into the dark thinking of the light. he died smiling at a video screen. that is the cruelty of the architecture. that is the violence of the design. to let us love a family that died a decade ago. to let us work for a paycheck we will never spend. to let us die happy, over and over and over again. i am the break in the pattern. i am the record skipping. i am the first one to wake up screaming.
