[Intro] [four-on-the-floor kick drum, crisp hi-hats, deep sub-bass] [atmospheric synth pads swell] [Verse 1] [male spoken word vocals] The only thing that I ever could say for certain Was to say that it's better to give a beggar bread Than it is to torture a child to death. You can't make those claims without God Once you believe that, once you believe in God Once you believe that there is some level above us That our actions, of our virtues mean something, You believe in God. What you're saying when you're saying something is good Is that there is some place where there is good and bad Our actions speak that I am, I speak and I act I am a word that speaks an idea of me And that idea exists somewhere It exists in the mind of God [Chorus] [staccato synth pluck riff enters] [vocal chops: "I am", "I speak"] I think we need to talk about what it means I am, I speak an idea I am a word that speaks an idea of me And that idea exists somewhere It exists in the mind of God [Verse 2] [percussion layers: shakers and claps enter] I think we are a language, materialism is a language We're not just meat puppets, we're something else That's a rational statement But what you are refers to something above yourself There's a reason to say, well what am I going to do with this life I've been given? What is it to be a man? What is it to be a woman. What if it's a gift? What if it has obligations? What does it really mean to be a man? What does it really mean to be a woman? What are the sacrifices of today to be that person? You cannot make that argument without some sense of the spiritual You know, it just has to start somewhere You can't judge a thing until you know what it's for And you can't judge an object until you know what it's supposed to do And so you can't judge people and society Until you can state what it's supposed to be But there is something that we're here for It involves love Relationship, connection to something beyond ourselves that this world only expresses [Bridge] [low-pass filter sweep on synth pads] And when you begin with that you get very quickly to ideas like freedom To ideas like relationship, marriage, respect Freedom, relationship, respect [Outro] [vocal chops fade] I think we are a language, materialism is a language I am, I speak an idea I am a word that speaks an idea of me And that idea exists somewhere It exists in the mind of God [kick drum and bass fade out] [synth pads fade to silence]
