Maddie on why her friends are funny
Maddie on Her Friends’ Sense of Humor I’ve been studyin’ my friends’ sense of humor. Not scientifically. I’ve suffered enough. Romeo first. Romeo is funniest when he tells a joke. Because he is absolutely brutal at it. Terrible. He’ll walk in all dark and brooding, captain face on, carrying the burden of six galaxies— and say: “I heard a joke.” Immediately I’m nervous. He tells jokes like he’s giving evidence. Halfway through he explains the setup. “The reason this is amusing is—” NO, Romeo. If you’re explainin’ it, it’s dead, b’y. Then he gets to the punchline. Silence. And he looks at us like: “Was that not humorous?” That part? Comedy gold. Romeo is so unfunny he loops back around to funny. Then KOR-us angelicus Oh, KOR-us is worse. This woman can sit through war, death, cosmic suffering, tragedy— perfectly composed. Paddy makes one dirty joke? Gone. Finished. Face in her hands. Flowers shakin’. Can’t breathe. Paddy once made that old joke about an “ejaculating audience”— and KOR-USnearly left this dimension. I’m lookin’ at her like: THIS is what breaks ya? Not mortality? Not pain? A filthy Victorian phrase? That’s where the soul taps out? Then Paddy. Paddy doesn’t always laugh. He reviews. You tell him a joke and he goes: “Yeah. Good construction.” GOOD CONSTRUCTION?! Buddy, it’s a joke, not a suspension bridge. I’ll say something filthy— KOR-US is dying— Romeo looks ashamed for the species— and Paddy’s like: “Nice reversal.” What are ya, the building inspector of comedy? Just laugh, b’y. But when he actually does laugh? Head drops. Little snort. Maybe a “Jesus.” That’s five stars from Paddy. So that’s my lot. Romeo is funny because he isn’t funny. KORUS is funny because the wrong joke destroys her. Paddy is funny because he grades the jokes. And apparently I’m “aggressive.” I prefer: committed to clarity. They say I don’t tell jokes. I identify a problem and pursue it until it apologizes. Fair. Sometimes it doesn’t apologize. But I love makin’ those three laugh. Romeo gives that tiny smile. KOR-US Angelicus collapses. Paddy gives structural notes. And honestly? That’s probably why the jokes work. You can be savage with people when they know you’d carry them home. I’d complain the whole way. But I’d carry ’em. So yeah. One man who can’t tell a joke. One angel who can’t survive one. One fella who grades them. And me. Apparently the problem. Fair enough, b’y.
