Dream Fifth A hunger gnawed at her stomach Her legs became heavy As she struggled and stumbled Through the endless wastelands Of human detritus Her head became light In it there was but one thought To find the soul Which belonged to all things That longed for rebirth And redemption Rooks declared a song of dying The weight of life was on her shoulders Light ran tenderly over her face There was a gun in her hand Her trigger finger twitched Lifeless trophies Hung on the wall of their being She saw the handle of a gunslinger’s pistol Notched too many times To function any more Laid out before her Was a wasted world The repository of excess Empty Ugly No place for redemption Very soon the judgement Must be made The guillotine would fall To sever one part Of their number from the rest Like a dying leaf Shuts off from the stem Returning strength For the next spring She was half lost In another possible world Where imagination guides the path She wanted life to remain still Still and small So that she could hear Her inner voice Then if she had to act She would act with certainty Recently life had become confused She was sure Sooner rather than later She would be abandoned To the changes Gathering around her Even Death Valley must flower With the coming of the rains
