One More Stop (Opening of Act I) - #BeforeMusical
[A quiet, rhythmic underscore begins, echoing the sound of a train rolling along tracks. The music grows from spoken conversation into melody.] [SFX of a train passing by] Every station looks the same Just another name I'll never learn. People step off, people step on, Someone's leaving, someone's homeward bound. Funny how a map is full of places That means nothingβ Until you almost miss one. I was supposed to read my book, Ignore the voices down the aisle. Pretend the world was very orderly, Measured out in kilometers and time. But then you laughedβ Not loudly... Just enough to interrupt my afternoon. "Sorry about that." "No... I'm glad you did." [The rhythm softens] Maybe we're only passing through, Maybe that's all this is. A conversation with a stranger Borrowed from tomorrow. One more stop. One more chance. One more city neither one of us had planned. If every journey has a turning, Maybe this is where it bends. "I don't know your favorite song." "You don't even know my name." "That seems fixable." "Or maybe that's what makes it interesting?" "Can I ask something ridiculous?" "Those are usually the best question." "What if... You got off the train with me?" [A brief silence. The orchestra holds a suspended chord.] "You that like people do this every day." "Maybe they should." "I have plans." "Are they good plans?" "They're... responsible plans." "Those are rarely the memories." Some moments knock politely, Some arrive without a sound. Some don't look important Until you've turned around. Who decides which story Becomes the one we tell? The careful road we've always known, Or one impulsive farewell? "You're very convincing." "I'm mostly improvising." "That's somehow obvious ...and charming." "I'll take charming." "What if tomorrow looks exactly like today?" "Then today deserves a chance." "Exactly." "What if I regret it?" "You'll have a wonderful story." "And if I don't." "Then maybe it becomes something else." Not forever. Not a promise. Not a photograph that never fades. Just tonight, Just these streets, Just two people with nothing much to lose. If the morning steals the moonlight, If the daylight calls us home, Still we'll know there was an evening That belonged to us alone. "This is Vienna." "Already?" "Already. Will you come?" [A beat.] "I probably shouldn't. Wait for me." One more stop. One more door. One more heartbeat than we counted on before. Every ending starts with leaving, Every hello asks for trust. We don't know what waits beyond this station, Only that the moment's calling us. One more stop... One shared night... One city waking underneath the fading light. If tomorrow changes everything, Let tomorrow make that choice. Tonight we'll simply follow The quiet hope inside our voices. One more stop... [The music swells into the orchestral entr'acte.] βββββββββ This piece is the first act of a musical adaptation of Richard Linklater's "Before" trilogy.
