The PE Song
It’s more than a kit-bag and a whistle in the air, It’s the science of the body and the "why" and the "where." From the pump of the heart to the twitch of the knee, It’s the physics of the person and the anatomy. You’re looking at the engine and the fuel in the tank, And the "Mental Toughness" that you’ve got in the bank. Let’s start with the Bones, the chassis of the frame, Protecting your organs while you’re playing the game. You’ve got the Femur for the power, the Cranium for the head, And the Vertebrae keeping you upright instead. Where the bones meet up, you’ve got a Joint in the mix, Like the "Ball and Socket" for the ultimate tricks. Then the Ligaments hold 'em, bone to bone like a glue, While the Tendons pull the muscle to make the move true. Now flex the Muscles, the "Antagonistic Pairs," Where one always works while the other one spares. The Bicep contracts while the Tricep extends, A perfect little partnership of "Contracting" friends. You’ve got the Fast-Twitch fibers for the sprint and the power, And the Slow-Twitch ones to keep you going for the hour. Everything is fueled by the Cardiovascular flow, The "double-pump" system that makes the blood go. Let's talk about the Energy, the "Oxygen" debt, The difference between a stroll and a heavy-duty sweat. Aerobic is the "steady" work, with air in the chest, Like a long-distance run or a marathon test. Anaerobic is the "sprint," the explosive high gear, Where you're working so hard that the "Lactic Acid" is near. You’ve got to find the Threshold, the limit of the heart, To know when the "Oxygen Debt" is about to start. Now step inside the Mind, where the real game is won, The "Sport Psychology" before the starting gun. You’ve got Arousal levels—the "Inverted U" curve, Where you need just enough "hype" to maintain the nerve. Too little and you’re bored, too much and you "choke," You’ve got to find the "Optimum" before the system broke. Use Imagery, Guidance, and S-M-A-R-T goals, To keep the motivation in the players' souls. Finally, look at the Socio-cultural side, The barriers to entry and the "Commercial" ride. How the Media, the Sponsors, and the "Global" demand, Have changed the way that sports are played in the land. From the "Golden Triangle" to the "Ethics" of the play, And why some groups are still being turned away. PE is the total package—the brain and the brawn, The study of the athlete from the dusk until dawn.
