The Chess Princess
“Check” out the rest of my Chess album! This song is the first of many, which tell the stories of all the different Chess pieces. You can use the link below to visit: https://suno.com/playlist/67d2fe22-fc31-4e87-aefd-994936bef339 This song is sung by the Chess Princess, the daughter of the White Chess King and Queen. She is locked in a tower for her own safety, and has grown very weary of endless warfare. The princess is named Anastasia, named after a special checkmate named “Anastasia’s Mate,” which is executed with the use of a knight and a rook on the very edge of the board. It’s a dangerous game my parents play Waging war against Black, day after day As I watch from my tower, I hope and I pray That the two of them will return home okay I’ve lost track of how many pieces they’ve slain Or how many brave souls we’ve lost… It’s a heavy price we pay Witness to this mindless slaughter Is the King and Queen’s only daughter That daughter is me Oh the things that I see They locked me in the castle in an attempt to keep that hidden And from leaving its walls I am strictly forbidden Here in my tower I watch in silence As our two nations prolong this meaningless violence Black against White Bishop against Knight King against Queen Oh what does it mean? Each one of our soldiers, down to the humblest Pawn Have a life and a story that soon will be gone And yet life goes on And yet the battle goes on Until after a storm of bloodshed and hate One side emerges victorious to declare Checkmate Checkmate Father moves only one space at a time Mother is free to move wherever she likes I cannot move anywhere, I am confined within my tower A Chess Princess does not have any real power Father tells me to trust in the strength of my allies and to always be on the defensive Mother tells me to exploit the weakness of my enemies and to always be on the offensive But no matter how they fight, their battles cannot be won At every battle’s end a new conflict has begun Is there anything that can be done? To end this cycle of death or must I be the one? Black against White Day against night Moon against sun Who has lost? Who has won? I alone see what is to be our fate We have doomed both our worlds to an impasse Stalemate What happens now? What happens then? If I try to make peace, will we just start fighting again? It’s up to me to end this feud once and for all But how can I change the world when I’m trapped within these walls? How can I end the rift that both sides perpetuate? How can I show love in a world marred by hate? If I act now, will things change? Or am I too late? To attack or to defend? To start or to end? To live or to die? Why must it always be so Black and White? There is no compromise, there is no in-between There is no Princess, only a King and a Queen And a board filled with pieces who will never make peace Trapped in limbo forever between victory and defeat Stalemate In a world of Black and White Can I be the Gray?
