The Night of Open Doors On the night the last apple was gathered, the villagers climbed toward the stones upon the hill. They carried wooden bowls of grain, lanterns whose flames were fading, and names they had never dared to speak while their bearers still lived. The oaks had surrendered nearly all their leaves, and the first frost had yet to settle upon the naked fields. It was said that on this night alone, the threshold between the living and the dead grew low enough to cross. At the summit stood a black figure, its head bowed since before memory. No one remembered who had raised it, nor who had first knelt before it. Some called it the lord of grain, others the one who counted the price of blood, and others still the one who arrived before the ending of every season. Yet every name grew small when laid before it. A woman placed one of her dead child's shoes beneath the stone. A man returned from war turned that child's name over and over in his mouth. The priest pictured the empty granary and counted the days remaining until spring. The woman prayed to see her child once more. The man prayed to forget that face forever. Neither knew that one prayer might erase another. At last, the priest raised an ember high. Neither offering, nor oath, nor confession could halt the night. The wind moved once, and the lantern went dark. No one screamed. Their fear had grown so old that they had learned to practice it as silence. Then a pale light stirred in the lowest reaches of the forest. Faint footprints appeared along a forgotten path. The woman sank to her knees, the shoe still in her hands. The man could not bring himself to raise his head. Some shadows extended a hand; others remained far away. No one was forced to draw near, and no one was required to answer to a name. That night, every house in the village stood unlatched. No one knew who might return. The forgotten passed upon the wind, as did those whose names had been left behind as curses, and those whom no one had ever forgiven. The flames made no distinction between their faces. Lanterns thought extinguished flickered, one by one, upon the thresholds. The stone did not return the child. It did not wash away the man's sins, nor replenish the priest's empty granary. Yet for that one night, it gave the forgotten a place to be remembered, and the survivors a place to lay down the words they had never finished. It was borrowed time, to be reclaimed at dawn. When daylight came, the footprints vanished like dew. The first frost settled over the fields, and the season turned, merciless as promised. The villagers lifted their eyes to the black figure. It had not changed. Its head remained bowed, as though, rather than accepting the countless bows offered to it, it had spent the ages bowing first toward the world. They did not call it a blessing. They had lost too much for that. Nor could they call it a curse, for the night's light still lingered in their palms. Winter is coming. So, for this one night, do not close the door.
