Glenn and the New Game Warden

🎵 Glenn And The New Game Warden 🎵 (Talkin’ country ballad • Light fiddle • Coffee shop tempo) ⸻ (Spoken Intro – low, steady voice) Now this happened back when Marble Falls Still woke up early and slow in the mornings… And the men that worked the land Met up to talk it over… Down at the Yacht Café… ⸻ (Verse 1) There was a new game warden come to town, Fresh badge, fresh crease, layin’ law down, Met the DPS man for coffee and eggs, At the Yacht with the ranch hands stretchin’ their legs. Boots on tile, cups clinkin’ low, Talk rolled easy like it always did go, Cattle prices, rain that never came— Then somebody mentioned that road huntin’ game. ⸻ (Verse 2) That warden leaned back, fixed his stare, Looked at Glenn sittin’ over there, Said, “I know what you’re doin’, don’t play no part… When I catch you, boy, you’re headed to the dark.” Room went still, you could feel it turn, Coffee cooled while the tempers burned, Glenn stood up—chairs scraped the floor, Took three men just to hold him there and no more. ⸻ (Chorus) Ohh you don’t call a man out in his own hometown, Not in front of the coffee crowd sittin’ around, There’s a line in the dust you best don’t cross, Or you’ll learn real quick who’s the boss. Yeah, Marble Falls don’t forget or pardon, When you push a man like Glenn too hard… A badge might shine, but pride runs deep— And some lessons come while you’re asleep. ⸻ (Verse 3) Next mornin’ sun just broke the sky, Warden stepped out, rubbed his eyes, And there before him, quiet and plain… Laid a half dozen old doe’s in his front yard. Not a word, not a track to show, Just a silent message in a row, Hill Country justice, cold and clear— “You best rethink what you said in there.” ⸻ (Verse 4) He called that DPS man right away, Said, “I know who did this—I’ll make him pay,” Law was hot and his temper too, Figured he knew just what to do. DPS man just shook his head, Looked at the line of deer laid out dead, Said, “Son… you can chase this if you feel you ought… But some fights round here ain’t worth bein’ fought.” ⸻ (Chorus) Ohh you don’t call a man out in his own hometown, Not in front of the coffee crowd sittin’ around, There’s a line in the dust you best don’t cross, Or you’ll learn real quick who’s the boss. Yeah, Marble Falls don’t forget or pardon, When you push a man like Glenn too hard… A badge might shine, but pride runs deep— And some lessons come while you’re asleep. ⸻ (Bridge – spoken, reflective) Now nobody ever proved a thing… And nobody ever asked again… Those deer got dressed out… Given to folks that needed the meat… And that warden… Well—he learned Marble Falls had its own way Of settlin’ matters. ⸻ (Outro Verse – soft) After that, things settled down, Coffee still poured in that little town, Warden stayed… but he changed his tone, Did his job… but he left some things alone. And Glenn? Well… Glenn was still Glenn, you see— Just another story That comes out of Marble Falls
