You were there

I still remember the light upon your face, those evenings without a name, when the world seemed far away. And I wonder if you remember too. We walked beneath the streetlights, while autumn filled the air, you spoke about tomorrow, I listened without care. Your hand was warm beside me, the night was cold and still, and every road before us seemed ours to take at will. You were there, you were mine, for a little while in time. Now your voice is far away, but I hear it every day. If I could return tonight, to those streets beneath the lights, I would never let you go— but there are places we can't know. I kept the little memories that no one else would see: a photograph, a winter coat, your name beside of me. The years have made us strangers, though I still know your eyes. Perhaps somewhere you're thinking of those same vanished nights. You were there, you were mine, for a little while in time. Now your voice is far away, but I hear it every day. If I could return tonight, to those streets beneath the lights, I would never let you go— but there are places we can't know. I still remember the light upon your face. I still remember those evenings without a name. And somewhere beyond the distance, somewhere beyond the years... I hope you remember me.
