Wallet - Part 2
Verse 1] I awoke from a fitful sleep, those numbers filled my head.Round and round like circling crows, each thought another thread. What could they be?What could they mean?A combination lock?A secret machine? A safety box,a bank account, coordinates to somewhere strange... His wife had searched that wallet twice. She knew those numbers meant something. I could see it in her eyes. [Pre-Chorus] The paper looked as blankas it had the day before. Until an old forgotten memorycame drifting through the door. Saturday afternoons.Spy books.Magnifying glass.Invisible ink.Lemon juice. "No... Surely not." [Verse 2] I held the paperjust above the flame. Not enough to burn it. Just enoughto wake whatever slept inside. Slowly... Brown lettersrose from nothing. Not more numbers. Just one word. SIMPSON I stared at it. Read it again. Three-five-seven-four-six-five. Simpson. Nothing else. [Chorus] A person? A place? A shop? A code? Another doorwaiting to be opened? The further that I followed it, the less it lookedlike somebody's lost wallet... and more like something I was never meant to find. [Verse 3] I searched the internet. Too many Simpsons. Builders. Dentists. Solicitors. Estate agents. Plumbers. Half the countryseemed to be called Simpson. I needed another clue. Something local. Something closeto Northwood House. Then I remembered... The road beside the wall. Old brick shops. Newsagent. Bakery. A little tailor's shopI'd barely noticed. Paint peeling from the sign. SIMPSON'S TAILORS I laughed. Not because it was funny. Because it couldn'tpossibly be that easy. Could it? [Bridge – music darkens] The black car. The woman. The expensive voicebehind the intercom. Northwood House. Simpson. Three-five-seven-four-six-five. Each answercreated two more questions. [Final Verse] Tomorrow... I'll visit the tailor. Just a normal customer. Nothing suspicious. Just someone needinga jacket altered. If there really isa secret hiding there... I'll find it. What could possibly go wrong? [Outro – whispered over growing tension] Three... Five... Seven... Four... Six... Five... Somewhere... somebody... is already watching.
