A Place I’ve Never Seen

A Place I’ve Never Seen I miss a place I’ve never seen. It calls my name between the screens. There is a road inside my chest, it does not lead to east or west. No map, no sign, no border line, only a light that does not shine for anyone but me. I hear it sometimes after rain, beneath the traffic, under pain, a little music thin and strange, as if my soul had changed its name and left it by the sea. And I do not know what I am missing. I only know it misses me. Somewhere beyond the usual weather, there is a door I almost see. I miss a place I’ve never seen, a shore between the blue and green. A house of wind, a room of light, a language sleeping under night. I miss a place that may not be, yet something there remembers me. If I should vanish from this scene, look for me where I have never been. I have worn cities like a coat, learned every street and every note. I have been careful, I have been wise, but still the distance has my eyes. It knows me far too well. Sometimes a window turns to gold, sometimes the air becomes too old, and I am standing in my skin like someone waiting to begin a story I cannot tell. And I do not know if it is memory, or hunger wearing wings. But every ordinary evening hides a country when it sings. I miss a place I’ve never seen, a shore between the blue and green. A house of wind, a room of light, a language sleeping under night. I miss a place that may not be, yet something there remembers me. If I should vanish from this scene, look for me where I have never been. Maybe home is not behind us. Maybe home is not ahead. Maybe home is the direction of the ache we never said. Maybe all our lives are compasses, turning while we sleep. Maybe what we call the distance is the promise we must keep. I miss a place I’ve never seen, a shore between the blue and green. A house of wind, a room of light, a language waking under night. I miss a place that may not be, yet something there remembers me. If I should vanish from this scene, look for me where I have never been. I miss a place I’ve never seen. It calls my name between the screens.
