The Fall

V5.5

Author Notes:
Written as a triptych of surrender, "The Fall" moves through the three stages of an ending that the body always feels before the heart admits it: the dread that gathers like a cold front across bare terrain, the departure that drains the color from the world, and the final release when daylight bleeds out and the last broken vow is washed away by rain. In the end, it is a love letter to the season that destroys us.

[The Cold Front]
There's a cold front coming in from the east
You can see it across the countryside
On the blank terrain where all the trees are bare
Mother nature mirrors the cold I feel inside

[Pre-Chorus 1]
So if it looks like rain
It's 'cause it's gonna rain
I just keep falling

[Chorus]
It's the fall (Fall)
It's the fall (Fall)
It's the fall (Fall)
It's the fall

[The Fading to Brown]
In the distance
I see your car drive away
The exhaust trailing down the line
As the green terrain fades into the brown
I knew that one day I'd lose you to time

[Pre-Chorus 2]
And as the fire dies
I can hear you say
"I just keep falling"

[Chorus]
It's the fall (Fall)
It's the fall (Fall)
It's the fall (Fall)
It's the fall

[The Letting Go]
There's a hollow in my chest where you used to be
And daylight bleeds from the dark sky now
The rain cascades across the falling leaves
As I let go of every broken vow

[Pre-Chorus 3]
And as my heart gives out
Beneath the weight
"I just keep falling"

[Chorus]
It's the fall (Fall)
It's the fall (Fall)
It's the fall (Fall)
It's the fall

[fade to end]
