VERSE 1 Travelling along country roads I came to a quiet park An old stream ran through it Its banks were hidden, dark And there beside the water Sat perfectly side by side An old pair of weathered shoes With their laces open wide VERSE 2 Did all of this mean something Maybe I should take a look Then I noticed on the table There was an open book Aged by rain and sunlight Its curled pages gently blew Rustling in the breeze As though they held a clue CHORUS 1 Why'd they leave here in a hurry? Did they get some sudden news? Did they wander too the forest And leave behind their shoes? Did they fall into the water And get swept away downstream? Is someone still out there waiting Wondering where they've been? VERSE 3 I saw the shadow of a man Sitting where the book now lay Leaning on his elbows Like he'd been resting there all day But before a word was spoken Something caught my eye There beside the table A backpack lying on its side VERSE 4 The shadow man had disappeared He was nowhere to be found The backpack, the shoes, the book Were all that lay around The shoes still stood beside the bank As if he'd just stepped away I wondered who that shadow was And what had happened there that day CHORUS 2 Who was this shadow stranger? Where did he go? A man had sat beside the book He's gone and no one knows Did he leave here in a hurry? Did he simply disappear? And why were all his things left there If he was never really here? BRIDGE The faded open pages Washed by rain and sun Seemed to hold a mystery That had only just begun If the stranger had a story Maybe the book could tell me why Or was it passing shadows Playing tricks on my eye FINAL CHORUS I believe the book knows something That its faded pages saw The stranger sat beside it So perhaps it knew him more It heard his fading footsteps Maybe even knew his name But somewhere in those pages A secret still remains OUTRO The words are fading slowly Washed by sun and rain The story of the stranger May never be explained The book will likely keep it And none will be aware Of the secret of the man who came And left his story there
