[Verse 1] In a small coal town By the black river bend Tin roofs, red boots And faces worn by wind They worked that hill For every crust of bread The spoil tip climbed Like a grave above their heads [Pre-Chorus] Then the rain came down Day after day It filled the cracks And soaked the clay The ground went soft The slope gave way [Chorus] The hill came down The hill came down No warning sound Just earth and stone The hill came down The hill came down And 144 Did not come home (The hill came down) [Verse 2] A mother set tea out A child chased a ball A miner on the lane Heard a rumble call Then the whole hillside moved Like it had a mind It swept through the homes And swallowed the line [Pre-Chorus] Mud in the doorways Dust in the sky Names in the silence Where the lamps had died The rain kept falling Like it wanted more [Chorus] The hill came down The hill came down No warning sound Just earth and stone The hill came down The hill came down And 144 Did not come home (The hill came down) [Bridge] Now the shovels rest And the crows fly slow Over broken steps Where the nettles grow They say the mountain Still remembers them Every heavy storm Returns again [Final Chorus] The hill came down The hill came down No warning sound Just earth and stone The hill came down The hill came down And 144 Did not come home The hill came down The hill came down We speak their names So they live on (The hill came down)
