[INTRO — close-mic, felt piano, distant choir] Before we call it over Before we call it true There’s something I should ask myself And something I should ask of you [VERSE 1] We were standing in the same storm On two different sides of rain You were hearing danger in me I was reading yours the same Every move became an answer To a question no one asked We were drawing our conclusions Through the broken glass of the past [PRE-CHORUS] I won’t tell you fear’s a fiction I won’t ask you to cross a line But if we’re safe enough for speaking Let your story stand by mine [CHORUS] Before certainty Before goodbye Before we make forever From a moment in the fire Tell me what you saw I’ll tell you what I knew Maybe I felt unsafe ’Cause I made you feel it too If the truth says leave Then love will set you free But if there’s something left Meet me before certainty [POST-CHORUS — gospel response] Before certainty Before certainty Let understanding speak Before certainty [VERSE 2] A conclusion can feel sacred When your heart needs solid ground But a verdict isn’t knowing If both voices weren’t around Lay the night out on the table What we meant and what we heard What made your hands start shaking What made mine reach for the door What I thought that I was guarding What you thought you had to flee Maybe both of us were frightened By what neither one could see [PRE-CHORUS] This ain’t asking for forgiveness This ain’t bargaining with goodbye It’s the courage to seek the whole truth When it’s safe enough to try [CHORUS] Before certainty Before goodbye Before we make forever From a moment in the fire Tell me what you saw I’ll tell you what I knew Maybe I felt unsafe ’Cause I made you feel it too If the truth says leave Then love will set you free But if there’s something left Meet me before certainty [BREAKDOWN — acoustic guitar, piano, voice] Same room Different view Same flame Different smoke Two hearts hearing danger In the words the other spoke [BRIDGE — choir builds] If danger lives here Go in peace Love should never make you stay If the truth is we can’t heal this I will honor what it says But if mercy finds a doorway And we’re safe enough to see Let understanding have its moment Before certainty [CHOIR] Let it speak Let it breathe Let the whole truth Come between What we feared And what we need Before certainty [FINAL CHORUS — warm major lift, full choir, rock-weight drums] Before certainty Before goodbye Before we turn one rupture Into the story of our lives Tell me what you saw I’ll listen all the way I’ll tell you where I lost you And what I’d do differently If the truth says leave Then love will set you free But if there’s something living Under all this history We don’t have to promise What tomorrow’s gonna be Just let understanding speak Before certainty [FINAL REFRAIN — choir and lead] Before certainty Before goodbye Love can face the whole truth Without asking fear to lie Before certainty Before we leave Let understanding speak Before certainty [OUTRO — lone piano, pedal-steel harmonic] Tell me what you saw I’ll tell you what I knew Maybe I felt unsafe ’Cause I made you feel it too
