Silently they pass across the snow-covered yard behind the curtain they don’t linger long Their footprints freeze instantly as they turn away through the crack in the door a faint breath echoes Don’t shout too loudly they’ll startle again leave them be just let them be Shadows on the ice, shadows on the ice They come and go Shadows on the ice, shadows on the ice A timid heart kneels (Shadows on the ice) (Shadows on the ice) They don’t ask for permission Nor can they stay Eyes like frost But they just flicker past When your hands are open they might dare a little laugh in the corner and then they glide away again Don’t shout too loud they’ll startle again let them be just let them be [Chorus] Shadows on the ice, shadows on the ice they come and go Shadows on the ice, shadows on the ice a timid heart kneels (Shadows on the ice) (Shadows on the ice) If you freeze yourself too they’ll stay by your side for a moment they don’t want to hurt you just to hide away in their nest
