“Don’t Let Me, But Let Me Go”

V6

Verse 1 I stand in front of Renee like the world finally chose a kind place. Her hands find my face. Mine find her waist. We kiss like we have time, like the night belongs to us, soft enough that even the air forgets how to be cruel. “I love you,” she whispers against my mouth. “I love you,” I answer, and for one clean second it is true in the simplest way: two people, still here, still choosing each other. Chorus 1 Then I look at her — really look — and my heart tears itself open in my chest. I fold. I seize. The floor comes up too fast. Renee screams my name like it could hold me together. I cannot speak. I can only cry. My eyes say what my mouth cannot: Let me go. Please. Let me go. (Please) But she will not. (Let me go) She holds me like love could outrun a failing heart. Verse 2 Her palms press, shake, beg the body I am trapped inside. “Stay. Stay with me. Don’t you dare.” I want to tell her it isn’t a choice. I want to tell her the last beautiful thing I saw was her. Instead the tears keep coming, silent, useless, and all I can give her is that look — not ungrateful, not unloving, just finished. The kind of look that means: You were the good part. Now let the pain stop. (Uhhh) Chorus 2 I looked at Renee and the world went white. She screams and tries to keep me in it. I cry and say nothing, because there is nothing left that would make this fair. My eyes keep asking her to let me go. Her arms keep answering no. We loved each other in a kitchen of ordinary light and now she is bargaining with a body that will not listen. Verse 3 She kisses my forehead like that might restart me. Says my name like a door she can still pull open. I love her for that. I hate that she has to do it. If I could leave her one last sentence, it would not be brave. It would be small and honest: I don’t want to hurt you by leaving. I also cannot stay inside this breaking. Look at me, Renee. (look in my eyes) I’m already halfway gone. Don’t make the last thing I feel be your panic instead of your mouth on mine. Bridge We said “I love you” with the whole truth in it. Then my heart answered in the worst language it knew. She wants a miracle. I want mercy. Neither of us is getting what we asked for. Chorus 3 I stand in front of Renee and then I am on the floor. We kissed. We said the words. We meant them. Now she is screaming and I am crying and the room is too small for both kinds of love — the kind that holds on, and the kind that has to leave. My eyes say let me go. Her hands say never. And between those two sentences a whole life ends in the arms of the only person I would have stayed for. Outro The kiss is still on my mouth. Her voice is still in the air. I don’t get to finish the night we started. She doesn’t get to keep the girl she just told she loved. Let me go, Renee. I’m sorry. I love you. Don’t let go of that. Just… let go of me. (I'm sorry) (I'm sorry)
